Basic Tools of the Trade - #2

    #2: Cutters

Another useful tool for cutting or trimming bonsais, the cutter is designed specifically for trimming small and large branches and trunks. Just like shears, this tool is made available in a number of forms. Included in the list of the most well-known are the following:

Concave Cutters – Often considered similar to that of the bolt cutters, the concave is a heavy duty material that cuts branches and twigs in a clean and smooth fashion. It is capable of removing the fair sized branches, and even those that a shear or scissor can handle. Note that several bonsai masters view this tool as the most important in the collection of bonsai supplies and tools.

Spherical Cutters – Labeled by many as the knob cutters, the spherical cutters are simply used for digging out some areas of special concern. The good thing to know about this equipment is that it leaves no damage to any of the barks after the work.

Root Cutters – As the name implies, root cutters are designed specifically for root trimming. This works to cut both large and small roots, and even those that are forming in balls. This is designed too tough so for it to handle the harshness of tough roots, sand, and dirt. For an interesting trivia, note that the root cutters are known by bonsai masters as the “dirty job weapon”.

Wire Cutters – The wire cutters are the tools designed for cutting wires, hence the name. The nice thing about this material is that they work to take off the wire from the trunks and branches of your tree without harming your precious tiny wonder. This too comes in different sizes and shapes, but all are crafted for such purpose.
