    And from what I understand of it, the plants need to be similar for a graft to take successfully.

    Apples & oranges are from 2 totally different sorts of plants & rarely grow in the same climates.

    yes, it's called grafting, and you can buy certain compounds that will help the two grow together.

    Not on this planet. You can only graft plants of the same genera, so you might get certain types of citrus that will accept a graft, but apples to oranges is not possible.

    You can only graft plants from similar species. Apples and oranges are way too different. You could graft 2 kinds of apple trees, or even 2 kinds of cactuses.But Not apples and oranges.
