This book is great for a newbie gardener like myself. The subtitle reads “for anyone who has ever killed a plant” and boy is she right – I’ve killed four plants. This book however is so simple and to the point she makes it hard for you to kill a plant again. She categorizes plants into a blue and red ribbon categories. Blue ribbon plants are those that are very easy to plant and maintain. Red ones are slightly more difficult. She has detailed instructions with pictures on how to properly pot a plant and how to test for the proper moisture. She also tells you how to find the right fertilizer and potting soil. The back of the book has a simple overview of the most common plant types and tells you quickly how much light or shade they need, how much water they need, and if they attract any types of pest or bugs. All very simple and very helpful.

Great book. I saw it at work (I work at a florist) and just had to have it. The illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommended

This book is full of beautiful photographs and practical advice. The author talks about the many types of pots, the best potting mix (not potting soil!) and the best fertilizer (Dynamite), and most of all the best plants.Having killed over 3000 plants herself, the author knows the best ones for success. She gives the pros and cons of over 150 plants and awards the best 40 or so “Blue Ribbon” status. Some of these plants are from the ground cover section of the nursery such as Sedum Angelina and others from the houseplant section such as Croton and this makes for more interesting pots.I recommend this book for anyone who likes to have a few pots around the patio and would want them to be both beautiful and fuss free.

I very much enjoyed this book. I do a lot of containers and this book gave great tips on plants that do well in containers. The containers the author uses are much bigger than mine, but the concepts are the same, I just use fewer plants. This book is a keeper, and one I will refer to time and again.

I enjoyed this book very much as it was instructive, informative, and contained much practical information. It was a melding of creativity, wise garden practices, and a basic method of rating and choosing plants along with suggestions for containers to improve the beauty and the functionality of containers in the garden.

The results of follwing the advice have been very beneficial in saving time, money(the plants have a good opportunity of survival — less replacement)and work while producing a lovely appearing group of plantings in various lights throughout the yard.

I have shared this book with many gardening friends. I hope that you will enjoy it also.
