    Know Your Target Market

In every business endeavor, no one succeeds without considering first the target market. The target market is basically the main object of your plan. It could be individuals or groups, depending on who you really are aiming your flowers at. Well, in today’s highly competitive market, there are a number of prospects available for you to choose from. It could be the farmer’s markets themselves, the retail florists, floral wholesalers, supermarket sales, or the on-farm sales.

Let’s take a closer look on how these possible buyers work. Consider the following:

Flower Farmer’s Markets – Contrary to what many people think, flowers don’t just create a big profit in the urban markets. The truth is even in small communities, fragrant and beautiful flowers can be a hit. However, it is important to make sure that the community you are considering has a good farmer’s market where customers are willing or interested to purchase flowers along with what they have produced.

So in this case, try to identify first your own market or the flower markets nearby. See if the market is just within driving distance, or is easily accessible to everyone. If you’ve found that the market is good enough for you to get started, there’s no other great move you can take than to contact the manager of the place himself. Talk to them to know and learn whether or not there is still an available space for a new vendor. Know the requirements and everything involved for you to get accepted and be able to start with your flower business.

It is also often recommended that you check and be familiar with the opening and closing dates of the market you are considering with. This is critical for the reason that in this way, you can focus on flowers that are blooming during those periods.

Retail Market – I bet you know what “retail” was. If you do, then great, but if you don’t, well, just note this fact – your possible retail market could be those upscale florists who will be most interested in flowers that are locally grown. How to find these florists? Just go through your phone book and determine which florists are likely to buy your harvests.

If you have identified, at least one or two, the next step to do now is to visit the shop and approach the manager. Just share your plans to the prospect and leave a business card or a contact number, promising to get in touch with the buyer when your flowers are ready. Nevertheless, it would be safe if you don’t expect a commitment from the buyer, for the reason he or she will only need to see your flowers before deciding to be your customer. Just know first his or her interest and see if the prospect is most likely to buy your flowers when ready or not.

Wholesale Florists – Wholesalers are everywhere, but unlike the flower growers and the florists, they pay the least. But, I guess this is not always the case. There are still some possibilities for the wholesalers to buy the most. They could be perfect as the target market for those flower growers who are living in an area that is far distant from the urban life. Well, according to some experts, wholesalers are the best choice for floral growers for the reason that they tend to buy in bigger amounts to those who drive to the city occasionally. And, paying them a visit could be worth driving knowing that most wholesale florists also sell some of the supplies you may need in the farm. So, if this is the case, try to talk to the buyer and share your plans, but still don’t expect any commitment.

Supermarket Sales – As you may know, flowers are sold in supermarkets. In fact, a number of flower departments are now opened at supermarkets. Well, it is for this reason that supermarket sales are considered as a good target.

However, unlike the other markets, most of the products sold at supermarkets are not the typical flowers. There are some fresh flowers though, but most are artificials. So you have to do some educating first you can encourage the buyer to do a business with you. You may need some time to do this, and if you don’t find your buyers interested, then go on. It would be better if you’ll try introducing your flowers into a number of stores you can find, even those that aren’t currently offering them.

On-Farm Sales – Most farms are located near a tourist area or a well-traveled highway. If you are working on this field, it would be best if you sell your flowers directly to the consumers. Why don’t you establish a flower stand and let the passers by take a look at your beautiful flowers and give them the chance to pick their own targets with pay? That’s a good idea for it will give you a chance to make your flowers known. Who knows, you might prosper someday, allowing you to branch out and sell your flowers to the other target markets.

As you may notice, flower growers are left with a number of great options to choose from. What is most important to consider now when thinking about selling your own flowers to the public is to know exactly which of the possible prospects are much interested to buy your crops. Don’t expect much. As mentioned earlier, start small and allow yourself to grow. That would be challenging.
